Youth Improv Workshop: Bringing Characters to Life Using VAPAPO

March 29 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Committing to Your Characters!

Great improvisers don’t just play characters—they become them. In this workshop, we’ll dive deep into character creation using Jill Bernard’s VAPAPO technique: Voice, Attitude, Physicality, Animal, Prop, and Obsession. By exploring these six elements, students will develop rich, three-dimensional characters that feel alive on stage.

Through guided exercises and scene work, participants will learn to fully embody their characters, holding onto their choices and viewing the world through their characters’ perspectives. This focus will help improvisers stay in character, respond authentically, and create dynamic, engaging scenes.

Whether you’re looking to sharpen your skills, break out of predictable patterns, or just have fun experimenting with bold new choices, this workshop will give you the tools to make every character unforgettable.

Topics in this Workshop Include:

  • Using VAPAPO to craft strong, distinct characters
  • Holding onto your character’s perspective throughout a scene
  • Making bold physical and vocal choices
  • Building relationships and emotional depth through character work
  • Strengthening your ability to stay in character under pressure

This workshop is designed for improvisers of all levels who want to deepen their character work and bring more specificity to their performances. Come ready to explore, commit, and have fun!
