Do you have anxiety? Are you looking for something other than talk therapy that could help? Have you ever been interested in improv but feel like your anxiety has gotten in the way? Improv for Anxiety is for you! Many times individuals with anxiety have difficulty forming deep connections to people outside of their comfort zone. In this class, individuals are able to explore and process triggers together and find group cohesion through play and humor. Students will find this class to be light-hearted and fun while gaining support with others who have similar struggles. In addition to improv techniques that promote mental health and manage anxiety, therapeutic modalities such as Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Biofeedback, and Rapid Resolution Therapy will also be integrated throughout the course. Students will also learn theater basics, the tools of improv, creating reality, and introduction to scenework. This class is taught by Andrea K. Baum, a psychotherapist trained in improvisational comedy, by improv instructor Greg Mihalik. Andrea and Greg are the creators of this course and work closely with the class to ensure a safe place for sharing and play.
- Do I have to perform or be put on the spot?
- No. This is not a performance-based course. You will be encouraged to participate in group and role-playing exercises and we will consider your comfort and anxiety level.
- Does it matter what kind of anxiety I have?
- Not at all. This class will benefit everyone; from those who have panic attacks to those who struggle with generalized or social anxiety and more.
- Naturally, I have anxiety about attending this class. Who can I contact for questions and concerns?
- Yes, you will be with a group of people who feel similarly. You can contact email@example.com with all questions and concerns.
This is what our students are saying for Improv for Anxiety
“Andrea and Greg are the perfect pair for this class. Andrea helps you understand what anxiety is and how to control it, and Greg has really fun games and activities to help you work through social settings that might trigger anxiety. I really enjoyed the class and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, creative way to work through their anxiety.” – Tabilah G.
“If you are someone who has trouble expressing yourself due to social anxiety, this class is a super supportive, fun way to start working on that and connect with others who struggle with the same thing!” – Kate P
“The instructors honestly valued everyone’s input and participation while encouraging us to try something out of our comfort zone.” – Stacy C.
“If you have trouble getting out of your own way, if you’re always inside your own head, if you know there’s a confident, funny, strong, outgoing, relaxed and self assured person inside you, but you can’t always find, this class will help. We all are that person, you just have to let yourself be them, and Andrea and Greg’s advice helps me be that person.” – Zach P
“This class taught me that being an introvert and having public speaking and social anxiety doesn’t mean I have to suffer through performance-based experiences. I now feel like I have tools to work through my anxiety instead of forcing myself through it, even when I’m on stage.” – Kristin S.
“I think this class is genius! I am so grateful that I found it. Thank you both for being so vulnerable with your students and creating real trust and understanding as the foundation. I never felt judged by anyone except myself, which helped me start to break that habit!” – Rob K.
“Both instructors very kind, open, and super knowledgeable about their expertise. I liked that everyone else in the class was dealing with similar things such as social anxiety which made it a compassionate environment. Tying the improv games with the CBT lessons was really cool. As a lifelong socially anxious person, just being in a situation where I am encouraged to express myself in the improv games etc is helpful, makes me realize how used to not doing that I am.” – Jordan R.
“I never felt like I was being forced through something that I didn’t want to do. I loved the balance of therapy and improv, and it helped me remember that there are a lot of ways to handle performance anxiety besides what is commonly taught, like the “just channel that energy!” method that never worked for me.” – Sam T.
